• Lina Zedriga has assumed acting leadership of the National Unity Platform.
  • Bobi Wine announced he will temporarily leave Uganda to continue his struggle abroad.
  • Zedriga takes charge at a challenging time following NUP’s 2026 election loss.

Lina Zedriga has assumed the role of acting president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) following the announcement that party president Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, will temporarily leave Uganda.

Zedriga, a lawyer and politician from Gulu, steps into the position at a critical time for the opposition party. Her appointment comes after Bobi Wine communicated in a video message shared on his social media platforms that he would be leaving the country for an unspecified period to continue advancing his political struggle from abroad.

The NUP leader said the decision was aimed at strengthening the push for democratic reforms while ensuring that the party remains organised and active under Zedriga’s leadership.

“As I step away from the country for some time, the deputy president will take over the leadership of the party and continue guiding our struggle for a better Uganda,” Bobi Wine said in the video.

Zedriga has been a prominent figure within the party and has previously faced political challenges. Following the January 2026 general elections, she was among several opposition figures who faced detention but was later released.

Her assumption of the acting presidency places her at the helm of the party during what many observers describe as a politically demanding period. According to results released by the Electoral Commission, NUP lost the 2026 presidential election and also failed to retain some of the parliamentary seats it held between 2021 and 2026.

As acting president, Zedriga will be expected to steer the party through this transition period, maintain mobilisation among supporters, and sustain the party’s political activities while Bobi Wine continues his advocacy outside the country.

Her leadership will likely play a key role in shaping the party’s next steps as it navigates Uganda’s evolving political landscape.
