Singer-songwriter A Pass, born Bagonza Alexander, isn’t shy about his talents. In a recent interview, he confidently revealed that creating a hit song is something he can do almost at will—but that doesn’t mean he’s chasing hits all the time.

“I can make a hit song anytime I want,” A Pass said. But for him, constantly chasing chart-toppers isn’t necessarily the most meaningful way to approach music. He prefers to focus on strategy, timing, and the kind of connection a song can build with listeners.
To make his point, he referenced fellow Ugandan artist King Saha, noting that even with the ability to churn out hits, King Saha is intentional about how and when he releases music.
“He understands the market and how audiences react to different sounds over time,” A Pass explained.

Beyond timing, A Pass emphasized his versatility. He says he can craft songs that resonate with all age groups—from kids to teenagers to adults. But when it comes to predicting a hit the moment a song leaves the studio, he’s realistic.
“For some songs, you may wonder how fast it’ll become a hit,” he shared. “It’s not always predictable.”
With over 11 years in the music industry, A Pass knows that success depends on more than just a catchy melody. Timing, audience reception, and industry dynamics all play a role.
He pointed to his hit collaboration Memories with Lilian Mbabazi as an example. “We recorded it in about 30 minutes. As soon as we finished, I told Lillian’s manager to start working on the video. Within a week, it went viral,” he recalled.
For A Pass, it’s clear that while talent is essential, understanding the audience and playing the timing right can turn a great song into a phenomenon.
