Ugandan comedian Reign Omusoyisoyi, one half of the celebrated comedy duo Maulana and Reign, has opened up about his bold transition from the classroom to the stage — a decision driven by both passion and survival.

Speaking during an interview on Galaxy FM’s Deep Talk, Reign revealed that before fame, he worked as a teacher earning a modest salary of UGX 400,000 per month. To make matters worse, the pay often came in installments, making it difficult to meet his basic needs.

“I was earning 400k, and even that came in bits. It was hard to plan or survive on it,” Reign shared.

His turning point came in 2019 after a performance at Comedy Store Uganda. On that particular night, he and his comedy partner received UGX 1.7 million from audience contributions — far exceeding his monthly teaching salary.

“When I sat down and calculated, I realized that was several months of my salary in one night. I knew I couldn’t look back,” he explained.

That moment became the catalyst for his leap into full-time comedy. Reign said he made the tough decision to walk away from his academic qualifications and fully commit to the entertainment industry.

He also emphasized the duo’s strong partnership, noting that they split earnings equally and maintain transparency by sometimes recording their collections to avoid disputes.

Today, Maulana and Reign are among Uganda’s most sought-after comedy acts, proving that sometimes, betting on talent can pay off far more than playing it safe.
