The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has confirmed that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, will contest for the presidency of Uganda in the 2031 general elections.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Daudi Kabanda, the executive secretary in the office of the PLU National Chairperson, during a press conference at the organisation’s offices in Nakasero.

Kabanda said he had been instructed by Gen. Muhoozi to officially communicate his intention to contest for the country’s top office in 2031.

“Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has informed me that he’s going to run for president of Uganda come 2031,” Kabanda announced, amidst cheers from PLU members.

Kabanda further claimed that Muhoozi’s decision to enter the presidential race had been sanctioned by President Museveni himself.

“I must tell you also that this has been sanctioned by His Excellency the President,” he said.

The announcement comes days after Gen. Muhoozi publicly declared his intention to run for president in 2031, saying he would stand for “the highest office in the land.” He also said he expected to win with the support of his father, President Museveni.

With Tuesday’s announcement, the PLU has now openly begun positioning itself around Muhoozi’s 2031 presidential ambitions, five years ahead of the next presidential election.

Kabanda also insisted that there is no conflict between Muhoozi and his father, saying that “the journey has started now” as the group prepares to mobilise support for the General.
