Ugandan musician Sama Sojah has revealed how he once believed that discipline and being a good person were enough to guarantee success in the music industry, only to learn that being too quiet can sometimes work against you.

The “Akaama” singer says he considers himself among Uganda’s five most disciplined artists, but admits that discipline alone has not brought him the rewards he expected.

Sama Sojah recalled attending a show where he allowed other performers to take the stage ahead of him because he believed being patient and professional was the right approach.

“I am one of the top five most disciplined artists in Uganda, but honestly, I have not earned anything from being disciplined.”

By the time he realised that opportunities and time were also passing him by, getting access to the microphone had become a struggle as other artistes fought to perform.

The experience taught him that while discipline remains important, an artist must also know when to assert themselves and protect their opportunities.

“Sometimes being soft and silent can get you beaten. You have to know when to stand up for yourself.”

Sama Sojah also spoke about his flashy accessories, explaining that the jewellery and other items he wears are not cheap. He challenged anyone who doubts their value to research their prices online.

Asked whether his flashy lifestyle could make him a target for thieves, the singer said he is comfortable because of the areas where he lives.

Sama Sojah added that he rarely leaves his home unless necessary, as he has created an environment where most of what he needs is readily available, including a recording studio.
