Mugerwa Faisal is steadily becoming a familiar name—not only on the football pitch but also in communities across Uganda where his commitment to helping others is leaving a lasting mark.

His journey with football began at a young age. He first laced up his boots at Sparta 09 Academy under coach Patrick Ssonko, where his talent started to take shape. Determined to grow, he later moved through Kampala Junior Team and Mydel Soccer Academy, refining his craft at every stop. Along the way, he looked up to players like Andres Iniesta and Tonny Mawejje, admiring their discipline, creativity, and composure on the ball. Those were qualities he wanted to mirror in his own game.

But football is only one part of his story.

Raised in Munaka, Lubaga Division by the late Mr. Mugerwa Swalih and Naluyima Rehema Zam, Faisal understands what it means to grow up with limited resources. His childhood experiences weren’t always easy, but they shaped his outlook on life. They gave him a deep awareness of how many talented children are overlooked simply because they lack opportunities.

That realization stayed with him.

In 2019, he turned that personal conviction into action by launching the Open Door Mugerwa Foundation Uganda. What started as a dream to give back has since grown into a lifeline for more than 500 children. Through the foundation, young people have received support, meals, and mentorship. For Faisal, it has never been about charity alone. It’s about empowerment—helping children see their own worth and believe in possibilities beyond their circumstances.

His professional football career, however, hasn’t been without challenges. Like many athletes, he has faced moments that tested his resolve. He began with the UPDF FC junior team before earning moves to Express FC’s junior and senior squads. Just as his career was gaining momentum, a serious knee injury threatened to sideline him for good.

For many, that could have been the end of the road.

Instead of walking away, Faisal found strength in responsibility. Knowing that hundreds of children looked up to him pushed him to fight through recovery. He eventually made his return to the game with Sparta 09, proving that setbacks don’t have to define a person—they can also redefine them.

At the heart of everything he does is a simple belief: one small act can spark change, and when people come together, that change can transform entire communities. With support from friends like Travis Mutyaba, who share his passion for giving back, Faisal continues to balance football with service.

On and off the pitch, his story is still being written—but it’s already clear that his greatest victories may not just be measured in goals, but in lives touched.
