Ugandan HipHop veteran GNL Zamba has opened up about the inspiration and deeper meaning behind the name of his movement and company, Baboon Forest Entertainment.

Speaking during a recent sit-down interview, GNL revealed that the idea traces back to his childhood love for baboon cartoons, but the real vision was inspired by the legendary movie The Lion King.

According to the rapper, one particular character in the movie, Rafiki, greatly influenced the philosophy behind the brand.

GNL explained that Rafiki stood out because of his wisdom and guidance, especially in helping Simba rediscover himself and embrace his destiny.

He shared that while searching for a mission statement for Baboon Forest Entertainment, he reflected deeply on the role Rafiki played in the movie and realized it aligned with what he wanted his movement to represent.

“Rafiki played a role for Simba when he was lost and still dwelling in his past. Rafiki advised him to quit playing as he had a kingdom to run,” GNL narrated.

The rapper added that this message resonated with him personally because he believes he plays a similar role in HipHop and in the lives of many people he interacts with by helping them discover confidence, purpose, and direction.

He explained that Baboon Forest Entertainment was therefore built around empowering people to realize their own potential and “discover their kingdom.”

GNL also broke down the significance behind the word “Baboon,” noting that it carries a HipHop feel because it contains the word “bar,” which is commonly associated with rap and lyricism.

Beyond that, he said he admires the way baboons move together in militant-like troops, something he believes reflects how HipHop culture should operate — united, organized, and strong.

Over the years, Baboon Forest Entertainment has grown into one of the most recognizable HipHop movements in Uganda, with GNL Zamba remaining one of the pioneers credited for pushing Lugaflow and urban HipHop culture onto the mainstream scene.
