Veteran Ugandan singer Mesach Semakula, famed for his classic hit “Tukwegomba Bangi,” has finally addressed the viral photo that has kept resurfacing online showing him alongside American R&B icon Usher Raymond in Atlanta.

For years, the image has sparked debate among Ugandans, with some questioning how the legendary local singer ended up in the same space as the global superstar. But according to Mesach, there was nothing accidental about that moment.

The singer explained that the meeting happened in Atlanta, Georgia, during a high-profile perfume brand launch hosted by Usher. He revealed that he had been officially invited to the exclusive event and was even expected to attend with fellow Ugandan star Juliana Kanyomozi, who later failed to make it.

“People thought I just found myself there by luck, but everything was planned. I had an access tag, which clearly showed I belonged at that event.”

Mesach noted that after taking the now-viral photo with Usher, they later proceeded to a hotel venue where the fragrance line was officially unveiled. He added that he was seated in the VIP section alongside senators and other distinguished guests, proving the event was no ordinary encounter. Usher has long been associated with major Atlanta events and celebrity launches, making Mesach’s story believable within that elite setting.

The “Sigwe Onsimira” singer also recalled being blown away by the reception Usher received when he stepped on stage.

“Usher was on stage for just minutes before singing, but people were already crying, clapping and screaming. That’s when I realized American superstars are treated very differently.”

Mesach added that Usher even recognized his presence in the crowd, something that left him starstruck. He used the experience to contrast how celebrities are respected abroad compared to Uganda, saying many local stars are often undermined even by fellow celebrities.
