Former presidential candidate Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa has taken a sharp swipe at the National Unity Platform (NUP), calling the party a major distraction in Uganda’s political scene.

In a candid interview with Sanyuka TV, Munyagwa didn’t hold back, saying there is an urgent need to “fight NUP and erase it all.” He accused the party and its leadership of posing as defenders of freedom and citizens’ rights while lacking what he described as “deep thinking” and a genuine vision for the country.
“What is killing NUP is its lack of thoughtful strategy before speaking or acting,” Munyagwa said. He cited an example from the campaign trail, when NUP’s president reportedly told supporters that even if he secured 90% of the votes, the Electoral Commission chairperson wouldn’t declare him the winner.
“That kind of statement only discourages people,” Munyagwa added. “The opposition’s role should be to motivate as many voters as possible to show up and challenge the incumbent.”

He went on to argue that NUP’s popularity rests more on rhetoric than real solutions, warning that the party’s approach is giving Ugandans a false sense of struggle instead of pushing for meaningful political change.
