• Ronald Balimwezo has won the Kampala Lord Mayor seat on the NUP ticket, defeating long-serving mayor Erias Lukwago.
  • Balimwezo secured 141,220 votes, with Lukwago finishing a surprising third behind the NRM candidate.
  • A trained civil engineer, Balimwezo promises a technically driven approach to fixing Kampala’s infrastructure and governance challenges.

Ronald Balimwezo has officially clinched the Kampala Lord Mayor seat, bringing to an end Erias Lukwago’s long reign at City Hall. Lukwago, who has served as Lord Mayor since 2011, was defeated in a race that reshapes Kampala’s political leadership.

Running on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, Balimwezo managed to unseat Lukwago, who this time contested under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF). The final results saw Balimwezo take a commanding victory with 141,220 votes.

In a surprising twist, the longtime incumbent Lukwago finished third, trailing behind the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate.

Balimwezo’s win did not come out of nowhere. He is a familiar face in Kampala’s local government, with a political journey that spans more than a decade. He started out as an LC chairman before rising to become Nakawa Division Mayor, a position he won in both 2011 and 2016. In 2021, he took another step up the ladder when he was elected Nakawa East Member of Parliament on the NUP ticket.

Throughout the campaign, Balimwezo repeatedly told voters that “the city needs an engineer.” As a trained civil engineer, he positioned himself as someone with the technical skills to fix Kampala’s long-standing infrastructure and management challenges.

With his victory now confirmed, Balimwezo is set to take charge of the capital’s council and steer Kampala into a new chapter of leadership.
