  • Dokta Brain says active singing can feel like “slavery” for musicians.
  • He may quit performing one day but plans to stay in music through other roles.
  • Songwriting remains his lifelong passion, which he says comes effortlessly.

Musician and songwriter Dokta Brain has revealed that he may one day step away from active singing, saying the life of a performing artist can feel like being “held at ransom.”

Speaking on Deep Talk with Roger Otis, Dokta Brain said he sometimes views singing as a form of slavery because of the pressure and demands placed on musicians.

“Singing can feel like slavery. A musician is always held at ransom,” he said.

Because of that, he believes there will come a time when he gives up singing to focus on other ventures within the music industry. He noted that artists who are deeply rooted in music don’t necessarily have to remain on stage forever.

“If music is really in you and you can’t leave it, you can always branch into other areas,” he explained, pointing to artist management as one option.

Dokta Brain cited Benon Mugumbya of Swangz Avenue as an example of someone who successfully transitioned from being an artist to managing star musicians.

Despite his mixed feelings about performing, Dokta Brain was clear about one thing he will never abandon: songwriting.

“The only thing I know I will continue doing is songwriting. I do it effortlessly, even when I’m not in the mood for music,” he said.

He also admitted that performing has had an unexpected benefit on his personal health.

“Singing and performing on stage has helped keep me in shape. If I was only doing songwriting, I would be a very fat man by now,” he joked.

Dokta Brain is widely regarded as one of the most talented songwriters of his generation. While he may not be a household name as a singer, many of his songs have deeply resonated with Ugandan audiences, earning him respect within the industry.
