Tributes continue to pour in from political leaders, entertainers, and supporters following the passing of Edith Katende Mufumbiro, the wife of National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, after a long battle with cancer.

The sad news was confirmed by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who revealed that Edith breathed her last in the early hours of the morning.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our dear sister and comrade, Edith Katende Mufumbiro,” Kyagulanyi said in a statement that has since sparked an outpouring of grief across the country.
Several figures within the National Unity Platform and beyond have expressed deep sorrow, highlighting both Edith’s struggle with illness and the difficult circumstances surrounding her family.

Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze shared an emotional message, describing the situation as heartbreaking and offering prayers to the grieving family. She particularly expressed sympathy for the young child left behind and the pain of a family facing such loss while separated.
NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya said the news “hits differently,” pointing to the challenges endured by Mufumbiro and criticizing the broader circumstances that have caused suffering to many families.
Kampala Woman MP aspirant Mary Flavia Namulindwa also conveyed her condolences, describing the loss as deeply painful and extending sympathy to the entire NUP fraternity.

Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi highlighted the painful context in which Edith’s passing occurred. He noted that at the time of Mufumbiro’s arrest last year, Edith was already undergoing cancer treatment, and her condition worsened amid the stress of her husband’s continued detention.
Similarly, Zahrah Luyirika echoed these sentiments, stating that the pressures surrounding the situation only added to Edith’s suffering.

Edith Katende Mufumbiro had been battling cancer for some time. On February 12, 2025, the same day prosecutors allege an unlawful drilling incident took place at NUP headquarters, supporters of Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro maintained that he was at the Uganda Cancer Institute, accompanying his wife for chemotherapy treatment.
