The newly announced Member of Parliament for Masaka City, Justine Nameere, has said her court-confirmed victory sets a new precedent in Uganda’s electoral politics, urging leaders and legal practitioners to adjust to changing political realities.

Nameere was declared the duly elected Masaka City Woman MP by Chief Magistrate Albert Asiimwe following a court-ordered vote recount.

According to the final results, Nameere garnered 25,502 votes, defeating NUP’s Rose Nalubowa, who polled 23,176 votes. Juliet Nakabuye Kakande of the Democratic Front obtained 6,136 votes, while independent candidate Nanyonga Sauya received 5,921 votes.

Speaking after the ruling, Nameere said the decision should guide future election disputes and warned against relying on outdated comparisons.

“This is now a new precedent. We must grow with the changing world and the changing politics,” Nameere said.

“Jurisprudence is about serving justice, not about winning arguments.”

She dismissed attempts to compare her case to older election disputes, explaining that the Masaka recount involved 314 polling stations, with only one ballot box affected, which she said reflected the court’s careful consideration of evidence.

Nameere also outlined her priorities in Parliament, saying she intends to focus on oversight, especially in government health facilities, where she believes citizens continue to suffer poor service.

“People are facing a lot of challenges in health centres and referral hospitals. That is where I am starting,” she said.

The MP-elect added that she will push to link women and youth in Masaka City to government funding programs, saying many have missed out due to lack of information and coordination.

She further pledged to follow up on President Museveni’s pledge to establish factories in Masaka City and to strengthen grassroots engagement through parish-level caucusing ahead of NRM meetings at Kyankwanzi.
