• Bukedde TV started with only $108,000 and three computers
  • Inspiration came from DJ Shiru’s synchronized music-visual concept at Club Silk
  • VJ Jingo and VJ Junior’s translated movies drove massive growth

Former Vision Group CEO Robert Kabushenga has opened up about the humble yet visionary beginnings of Bukedde TV, revealing how a simple idea—backed by just $108,000—grew into one of Uganda’s most influential television stations.

Speaking in an interview with YouTuber Kasuku, Kabushenga credited the station’s success to three key figures: DJ Shiru, VJ Jingo, and VJ Junior.

Kabushenga revealed that the idea for Bukedde TV was sparked at Club Silk. While seated in the VIP section, he noticed something unusual—the music being played by the DJ was perfectly synchronized with visuals on TV screens.

“I saw something new—the DJ was playing music, and the same content was being shown on the screens. It was coordinated. That caught my attention,” Kabushenga said.

Curious, he approached Club Silk founder Stephen Kavuma, who credited the innovation to DJ Shiru. Inspired, Kabushenga immediately sought him out and brought him on board.

Starting with just three computers and limited equipment, DJ Shiru helped shape the station’s early programming. A strategic 5PM time slot—targeting audiences returning from work—quickly gained traction. The launch was further amplified by religious leaders who prayed for the station, boosting its visibility and public appeal.

“When we brought in VJ Jingo and VJ Junior with translated movies, the station just exploded,” he added.

Launched in 2008, Bukedde TV tapped into local language content and relatable entertainment, setting it apart in Uganda’s media landscape. Today, it remains a dominant force, proving that innovation, timing, and cultural understanding can turn modest beginnings into lasting success.
