David Lutalo has voiced strong concern over the continued infiltration of politics in Uganda’s music industry, warning that the two spheres are fundamentally incompatible.

The veteran singer argued that politics has steadily crept into the creative space, distorting artistic expression and putting unnecessary pressure on musicians to take sides. According to Lutalo, music thrives on freedom of thought, while politics often imposes division and control.

“Politics and music cannot exist together. Once politics enters any profession, it begins to lose its meaning,” Lutalo said.

He emphasized that musicians, like any other individuals, deserve the freedom to think independently and make personal choices without external pressure. Lutalo noted that when artists feel targeted or frustrated, they often channel their emotions into music—sending messages through lyrics that are best understood by those concerned.

“A musician speaks through their art. When frustrated, they compose songs as direct messages—only the intended audience truly understands,” he added.

Lutalo further described musicians as visionaries, comparing them to prophets who can sense when something is going wrong in society. In such moments, he said, artists may choose to distance themselves or respond creatively through their music.

The Kapapala singer’s remarks come against the noticeable shift in Uganda’s entertainment landscape, particularly after Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine—entered active politics about 8years ago. Since then, many musicians have faced increasing pressure from fans and the public to declare political allegiances.

This, Lutalo believes, has had a lasting impact on the industry, blurring the lines between art and political activism. Therefore the singer insists that preserving the independence of musicians is crucial to maintaining the authenticity and purpose of their craft.
