- Vinka says bars have overtaken traditional concert spaces by offering music, food, drinks and live performances in one place.
- She blames insecurity and overcrowding for pushing revelers away from major outdoor events.
- Post-COVID nightlife habits have shifted, with more Ugandans preferring smaller bars closer to home over big concerts.
Swangz Avenue singer Vinka has weighed in on the changing face of Uganda’s nightlife and concert culture, arguing that bars and growing security concerns have played a major role in the decline of major outdoor entertainment venues.

Speaking about the state of concerts and hangout spaces, the “Love Panic” singer said bars have gradually taken over the role once played by iconic event grounds and entertainment spots such as Club Obligato and Lugogo Cricket Oval, which used to pull huge crowds for live music and major shows.
According to Vinka, many bars now offer almost everything revelers need in one place — from drinks and food to live bands and performances by established musicians — making them a more convenient option than large-scale concerts.
“Bars have taken over because they offer people almost everything in one place, including live performances and a more relaxed experience.”

She added that Uganda also has fewer clubs than before, leaving bars to dominate the nightlife scene even further.
Vinka also pointed to insecurity and overcrowding as reasons many people no longer feel comfortable attending outdoor concerts.
She revealed that when she invited a friend to attend her maiden concert at Lugogo Cricket Oval this August, the first concerns raised were safety, congestion and the stress of being in a massive crowd.
“People now prefer simple, nearby hangouts where they can enjoy themselves and easily get back home without worrying about insecurity or overcrowding.”
Her remarks reflect a wider shift in post-COVID nightlife habits, with many Ugandans increasingly choosing neighborhood bars and intimate hangouts over crowded music concerts, especially places closer to home where they can drive back safely after a night out.
