Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has been named the next King of the Tooro Kingdom, following the passing of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The announcement was made Wednesday evening by leaders of the Ababiito clan at Karuziika Palace, in the presence of members of the Babiito clan and the 21-member succession committee.

Monsignor Isiah Mayombo read the official announcement on behalf of the Ababiito clan, confirming that Prince Kijanangoma had been selected following consultations and due diligence by the committee tasked with identifying a suitable candidate for the Tooro throne.

According to the resolution, the General Meeting of the Ababiito clan elected the committee to identify the next King following the death of Omukama Oyo. The committee said it acted under the leadership of Omujwera Musuuga, the head of the Ababiito clan, and undertook consultations and other considerations before settling on Prince Kijanangoma.

The resolution, signed by 19 members of the committee, stated that the authority to elect the King of Tooro rests with the Ababiito clan.

“Having been elected by the General Meeting of Ababiito Clan to elect the suitable candidate for the throne of Tooro upon the demise of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV,” the resolution reads in part.

The committee subsequently resolved that Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and grandson of the late Omukama George David Rukidi III, should be enthroned as the new Omukama of Tooro.

The committee further stated that his enthronement will be conducted in accordance with the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away on August 27, 2026, in the United States where he had travelled for specialised treatment.

With the Ababiito clan now formally endorsing Prince Kijanangoma, attention turns to the preparations for his enthronement as the next Omukama of Tooro.
