Ugandan singer Winnie Nwagi has opened up about the kind of friendships she now values, revealing that growing older has changed what she looks for in the people around her.

Nwagi made the remarks during a sit-down with fellow musician Sheebah Karungi on the Let’s Talk About It podcast, where the two artistes reflected on friendship, personal growth and their attitudes towards other people’s success.

According to Nwagi, she previously wanted friends who could bring her into the social scene, showing her where the latest “plots” and happenings were. However, she says her priorities have changed with age.

“I want friends who have what I don’t have. Someone who can help me achieve what I don’t have,” Nwagi explained.

The Matala singer also said that she has grown to appreciate people who work for and achieve things for themselves. She explained that she does not feel jealous when another woman succeeds, regardless of how that person acquired what they have.

For Nwagi, the most important thing is seeing someone happy with their achievement.

“I’m proud of women who achieve things on their own. I don’t care where you got it from; if you have achieved what you wanted and you’re happy, I’m happy for you,” she said.

Sheebah appeared to share the same outlook, saying she also does not have jealousy towards other people’s achievements.

The two musicians agreed that they can celebrate another person’s success without feeling the need to question where it came from or why they themselves do not have the same thing.

For Nwagi, this is part of who she has become as she has grown and gained a different perspective on life and friendship.
