Musician Weasel Manizo has expressed confidence that the Mayanja family’s influence on Uganda’s music industry is far from over, saying a new generation is already emerging to continue the family’s musical legacy.

For years, the Mayanja family has been one of the most dominant forces in Uganda’s entertainment industry, producing some of the country’s biggest music stars.

The family’s musical journey has given Uganda legendary names including Jose Chameleone, Weasel Manizo, Pallaso and the late AK47, with each of them making a significant contribution to the industry.

Now, the next generation appears ready to carry the torch.

Jose Chameleone’s son, Abba Marcus, is pursuing a music career while based in the United States, while other members of the extended Mayanja family are also finding their way into the industry, including music production.

According to Weasel, the family has no intention of allowing its musical legacy to end with his generation.

“We don’t want music to die with us. The children and the younger generation are coming up to continue what we started,” Weasel said.

He believes the family’s presence in the music industry will continue for many years as younger members take over from their famous fathers and uncles.

Weasel also congratulated Abba Marcus after he recently became a parent, joking that the development had officially turned him and his brothers into grandparents.

“Congratulations to Abba Marcus. He has made us grandparents, and Malcolm is also around his age, so you never know who could be next,” Weasel joked.

Weasel Speaks Out on UPRS Royalties

Away from the family’s musical future, Weasel also raised concerns about his royalties from the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS).

The singer revealed that he recently received approximately Shs260,000 in royalties, an amount he believes does not reflect the value and popularity of his music catalogue.

According to Weasel, the royalty payment concerns have never been fully resolved.

He said UPRS has explained that his royalties are shared with the estate of his late musical partner Mowzey Radio, with Radio’s share reportedly being sent to his mother.

However, Weasel questioned the arrangement, saying they have never signed anyone to take over the distribution of their music or their royalty collection.

The singer believes the matter needs to be properly addressed to ensure that musicians receive fair compensation for their work.Catchy headline
