Next Media journalist Mildred Tuhaise has a straightforward rule when it comes to renting: your rent should never take up more than 15% of your salary.

She says this principle has guided her through years of renting and has been key to staying financially disciplined.

“Think about it—how can you earn one million shillings and pay five hundred thousand in rent? That’s nearly half your income. It just doesn’t make sense,” Mildred explained.

For her, the size or glitz of a home has never been a measure of success. The seasoned journalist says she’s perfectly content living in a space that some might call “low class.”

“I’m fine with a house that doesn’t necessarily reflect who I am, as long as it fits my budget and lets me live without financial stress,” she shared. To Mildred, true luxury isn’t about appearances—it’s the peace of mind that comes from not overextending yourself.
