Veteran Ugandan singer Iryn Namubiru has spoken candidly about the true reason she chose music, making it clear that her journey was never influenced by trends, competition, or the glamorous lifestyle often associated with the industry.

Speaking during Sanyuka Bigenda Bitya, Namubiru said her love for music came from within and was driven by genuine passion.
“I started singing because I was passionate about it. I didn’t sing because I saw so-and-so sing, or because I wanted to buy a very expensive car,” she said.
Her remarks set her apart from many artistes who are often pushed into music by outside influence, fame, or the promise of money. For Namubiru, the decision was deeply personal and rooted in love for the craft itself.

The celebrated vocalist also highlighted what she believes is her greatest strength as an artiste — live singing.
“My strength is singing live, I’m good at that. I also enjoy dancing, but my attention is always on the sound. I rehearse and pay attention to every detail,” Namubiru explained.
Her emphasis on rehearsal and sound quality reflects the discipline that has helped her remain one of Uganda’s most respected vocalists over the years.
However, the singer admitted that musicians still face major financial challenges despite their contribution to the entertainment industry.
“We don’t earn what we deserve from our music,” she said.
When the issue of copyright in Uganda came up, Namubiru chose her words carefully, hinting at frustration with the lack of progress.
“I don’t want to talk about Uganda’s copyright situation, I’ve tried to talk to a few people but it looks like we’re not on the same page,” she noted.
Beyond the business side of music, Namubiru also shared the touching inspiration behind one of her well-known songs, Nsimye.
“The song Nsimye was a reflection of my family background — my childhood and my growing up to where I am,” she revealed.
The revelation gives the song an even deeper emotional meaning, showing that some of her most powerful music is drawn directly from her life story and upbringing.
For Iryn Namubiru, music has always been bigger than fame. It is about passion, discipline, and telling real stories that connect with people.
