The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has paid tribute to the late Helen Nakimuli, describing her as a dedicated leader and a caring mother whose legacy will live on through her child.

Speaking during a sitting of the Parliament of Uganda, Among read a condolence message from Kibuli Secondary School, where Nakimuli’s daughter, Melanine Sobe, is a Senior One student. The school expressed sympathy to Parliament and acknowledged the loss of a parent to one of their learners.

“We express our heartfelt condolence to the Parliament of Uganda for the loss of the Member of Parliament, and to our student Melanine Sobe for the loss of her beloved mother,” the message read.

Among used the moment to rally colleagues, reminding them of their shared connection to the late legislator.

“We are all friends to Nakimuli. And I want to thank you for loving her,” she said, drawing an emotional response from the House.

She emphasized that while Nakimuli’s death is a painful loss, her legacy continues through her daughter.

“Nakimuli has not left us empty. She has left us with a flower. She has left a daughter behind,” Among added.

Moved by the situation, the Speaker revealed that she and her family had taken a personal step to support the child’s education. After receiving the school’s message, they decided to clear Melanine’s school fees through to Senior Four.

“On receipt of that letter, we thought about it carefully as a family. We decided to pay her school fees up to S4. The fees have been cleared, and here is the receipt,” Among told the House.

She noted that the contribution was made under the Anita Foundation, alongside support from Bukedea Comprehensive School and the Magogo Foundation.

Nakimuli’s passing has left a gap in both Parliament and her community, where she was known for her commitment to service. Leaders described her as compassionate and dedicated, with a strong connection to the people she represented.
