• Balaam Barugahara says Bobi Wine left Uganda immediately after elections
  • Bobi Wine had claimed he was in hiding due to security threats
  • Conflicting narratives deepen post-election political tensions in Uganda

The Minister of State for Gender and Youth Affairs, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, has accused National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of fleeing Uganda immediately after the January 2026 general elections.

Barugahara’s remarks come days after Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, revealed that he had secretly left the country and traveled to the United States to continue lobbying for international support regarding his political struggle.

Following the elections, Kyagulanyi had maintained through social media that he was in hiding within Uganda, alleging that security agencies were actively hunting for him. He shared videos and updates suggesting he was evading arrest while remaining resolute in his cause. But according to Balaam these videos had been pre-recorded.

“Bobi Wine is not in hiding as he claims. He left the country immediately after the election results were announced,” Barugahara said.

According to the minister, the opposition leader initially stayed in London under the care of Pastor Kyazze before relocating to Boston in the United States, where he is reportedly continuing his activities.

Security agencies have also previously dismissed claims that they were pursuing Kyagulanyi, insisting that if he were within the country, he would have been apprehended. Despite this, security presence remains visible at his residence in Magere.

“This is political theatrics meant to excite his supporters. The reality is he fled long before the narrative of hiding emerged,” Barugahara added.

Apparently Bobi Wine’s narrative and that of government have all been parallel leaving the public in speculation and to decide the truth for themselves.
